LAKE HALLIE – A train and flatbed tractor trailer collided at a rail crossing in Lake Hallie on Wednesday morning.
The crash occurred at 6:19 a.m. at the railroad crossing on 30th Avenue, said Lake Hallie police chief Cal Smokowicz.
“The flatbed semi was hauling construction equipment and was heading east on 30th Avenue,” Smokowicz wrote in a press release. “All vehicle traffic at the 30th Avenue railroad crossing is controlled by a yield sign. The semi-truck failed to yield and struck the train. The Wisconsin State Patrol was requested to assist with an inspection and any enforcement action.”
The driver of the tractor trailer is a 35-year-old male from Lake Hallie. He was taken to a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. His name wasn’t released.
“The last vehicle versus train accident at this intersection occurred on September of 2015 at 10:22 a.m.,” Smokowicz said. “Two other vehicles versus train accidents occurred at the 40th Avenue crossing, one in 2014 and the other in 2012. Drivers need to remember that trains cannot stop in time to avoid a collision so vehicles must do so.”
