SHELDON — A restaurant in Rusk County was destroyed early Tuesday morning after an explosion and fire.
The explosion at Reich's Roadhouse in Sheldon happened at about 2:45 a.m., said Chad Jones, chief of the Sheldon Fire Department.
The owners, Nick and Joey Reich, and their two children live above the restaurant and were able to escape before fire engulfed the building, although Nick Reich endured some burns to his face, Jones said.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, with investigators initially focusing on a propane boiler and water heater as possible sources, Jones said.
A GoFundMe fundraising campaign was set up for the Reichs and had raised $3,150 as of 10 a.m. Wednesday. The family has owned the popular business for more than 10 years, Jones said.
Seventy firefighters used about 270,000 gallons of water in battling the blaze for more than 10 hours, he said.
