Sections of recreational trails, pedestrian underpasses and areas in waterfront parks are expected to flood later this week in Eau Claire.
At 10 a.m. Tuesday, the Chippewa River was still 13 feet below flood stage in downtown Eau Claire, but the city expects it will rise about nine feet during the week.
Lower areas of the trail behind UW-Eau Claire’s Haas Fine Arts Center and at the city boat landing by Hobbs Ice Center are expected to begin flooding on Thursday morning, according to a city news release. Should that forecast prove correct, those trail sections would remain closed throughout the weekend, too.
Downtown pedestrian underpasses at Madison and Farwell streets would flood at that level. Lower areas of Owen Park along the riverfront also would be waterlogged.
The river is expected to crest Friday morning, but that can change due to additional rainfall upstream and hydroelectric dam activities.
