Kayakers escape fast currents on Eau Claire River

The Eau Claire Fire Department responded to a report of a capsized kayak on Friday afternoon near the Barstow Street bridge.

According to Steve Vargo, battalion chief, the department received a report at 6:03 p.m. that two kayakers capsized while coming down the Eau Claire River. Both people got to shore safe near Phoenix Park without assistance from the department. Neither required medical care.

As of 6 p.m. Friday the water level on the Chippewa River was at 763 feet in downtown Eau Claire, according to the National Weather Service.

The water level had been almost 2 feet higher on Thursday, causing some low-lying parts of the Chippewa River Trail to flood. Water levels began falling Friday, but river currents remained fast.

At their current water level, rivers in downtown Eau Claire are swift and unpredictable, Vargo said Friday evening. He advises residents use caution.
