Eau Claire school board members on Monday will talk about the district’s facility use policy again, which has irked some in athletic programs because it bars sports teams from using practice space on recognized holidays.
“I think a lot of (Monday’s discussion) will depend on the Policy and Governance Committee on Monday morning,” said schools Superintendent Mary Ann Hardebeck. “They’ll review the feedback they got, and they’ll decide if anything needs to be tweaked or changed.”
In the same vein, the school board will vote on the creation of an equity committee for athletic programs in the school district. That committee will examine equity in the district regarding sports, Hardebeck said.
Abby Johnson, the district’s business manager, said at the board’s last meeting that the decision to close down facilities on holidays stems from a desire to take a break. Holidays that fall under the policy include New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
A handful of holidays fell on a weekend this school year, meaning the recognized holidays defaulted to the Friday before. Some involved in district sports said at the last meeting that interfered with practice schedules.
