A Minnesota man is accused of causing significant facial injuries to a male after punching him at an Eau Claire tavern.

Maxwell E. Inskeep, 22, of St. Paul was charged Tuesday in Eau Claire County Court with a felony count of substantial battery and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct.

A $1,000 signature bond was set for Inskeep, who returns to court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.

According to the criminal complaint:

A male who was bleeding from the nose and mouth at 2:18 a.m. May 20 contacted an Eau Claire police officer to report that he was punched by an unknown man inside The Pickle, 341 Water St.

The male’s uncle said they were inside the tavern when the man began throwing ice at other patrons and causing a disturbance.

The next thing he knew, the man threw a punch at his nephew.

Tavern staff identified the man who threw the punch as Inskeep.

The male sustained a broken nose, concussion and several fractures to bones in his face.

The male said he was at The Pickle celebrating his cousin’s graduation.

Besides throwing ice, Inskeep also threw a drink.

The male said he threw a few ice cubes back at Inskeep, who then walked over and struck him in the face with an open hand.

The male said he grabbed Inskeep to keep himself from being further assaulted.

Inskeep’s friends also hit the male in the back of the head.

Inskeep and his friends then fled the scene.

The male later told police his nose fractures would require surgery.

The tavern’s video surveillance showed Inskeep hitting the male in the face.

A police officer contacted Inskeep by phone on May 25, indicating he needed to speak with Inskeep about an incident the previous weekend at The Pickle.

Inskeep said he knew what the officer was referring to.

If convicted of the felony charge, Inskeep could be sentenced to up to 18 months in prison.
