MENOMONIE — In an attempt to limit the amount of geese gathering and defecating in city parks, the City Council voted unanimously to allow the Police Department to conduct a controlled hunt beginning in September.

The proposal establishes a controlled waterfowl hunt on Lake Menomin that is not open to the public.

Officer Andy Brutlag said in his proposal his goal is to deter Canada geese from gathering near Lake Menomin and city parks.

“They’re a lot smarter than you think,” he said.

He said if geese discover city parks and the lake are unsafe they will not return.

Councilman Hector Cruz said geese defecating has been problematic in Evergreen Cemetery.

“Those geese just make a mess of that cemetery,” he said.

In a letter to the City Council, it is stated lighting systems, pellets on the ground and predator silhouettes have been previously used with little results.

Brutlag said there is no timetable for how long this will take. If it takes one hunt and the geese don’t come back, there is no need to continue, he said.

The group of hunters will only hunt Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, and it’s expected they will hunt between 5 and 9 a.m.

The potential hunters include mostly off duty Menomonie police officers and some other residents. All need to be approved by police Chief Eric Atkinson.

Signs will be set up to let the public know a hunt is occurring nearby in some city parks.
