An Eau Claire woman is accused of accidentally shooting herself in the hip playing with a gun while intoxicated.
Donna M. Hazelton, 21, 518 Germania St., is charged in Eau Claire County Court with a misdemeanor count of possession of a firearm while intoxicated.
Hazelton is free on a $100 signature bond, which prohibits her from drinking alcohol, entering taverns or possessing handguns. She returns to court Nov. 4.
According to the criminal complaint:
Personnel with Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire’s emergency room contacted police Aug. 25 after Hazelton came in with a gunshot wound to her hip.
Hazelton and her boyfriend both said it was an accident and didn’t want police involved.
The boyfriend told police Hazelton had been drinking throughout the night and shot herself in the leg with his 9mm handgun.
Hazelton told police she found the gun at around 4 a.m. in an armrest compartment of the couch. She took the gun out of the holster and began playing with it.
While handling the gun, she said, it just “went off.”
The boyfriend, who was sleeping in the bedroom, came out and took her to the hospital.
A breath test showed Hazelton had a 0.115 percent blood alcohol content, which is nearly twice the legal limit for driving in Wisconsin.
