A strong field of runners is expected for the 48th running of the Indianhead Track Club’s Frigid 8 and Thermal 3 road races on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church on the west side of Chippewa Falls.
The defending champion is Cornell native and McDonell senior Isaac Bohaty, who turned in a time of 48 minutes, 16 seconds to best runner-up Kevin Larson of Altoona by a solid margin last year.
Bohaty won the WIAA Division 3 800-meter title last spring and finished in the top 10 at state cross country.
Other previous winners who could be on hand are Scotty Hayden, who set the course record at 42:28 in winning two years ago, and Brent Kann, the recent winner of the Carson 10 who won the Frigid 8 in 2014 and 2011.
Last year’s female winner was Colfax’s Lisa Tavares, who won in 54:25, with Becca Maxwell of Westby second.
Osseo’s Jesse Becker was a repeat winner in the 3-mile in 16:07. He now runs for Grand Valley State in Michigan. Westby’s Brenda Maxwell was the women’s winner in 23:26.
Mild weather conditions are predicted and race director Warren Kerola is looking for a big field of runners. Race day registration and packet-pickup will begin at 9 a.m. at the church.
