Men's hoops: Diekelman wins it for Blugolds

George Diekelman’s layup at the buzzer lifted UW-Eau Claire to a 75-74 victory over St. Scholastica in nonconference men’s basketball action Thursday night at Reif Gym in Duluth, Minn.

Diekelman’s game-winner came after a full-court pass to the top of the key, a deflection and a scramble.

Brandon Newman had given the Saints the lead at 74-73 with a layup with 3 seconds remaining. That came after a Chris Duff go-ahead 3 with 11 seconds left.

Diekelman finished with 15 points for the Blugolds (4-2), winners of three straight. Duff had a game-high 26 points on 10-for-16 shooting. He was 6-for-9 from behind the 3-point line. As a team, UW-Eau Claire was 11-for-20 from 3.

Sean Miller scored 11 points, while Dan Becken and Montrell Oliver each had 10, giving the Blugolds five scorers in double figures.

Sam Thompson scored 17 points off the bench to lead the Saints (2-4), who won the rebounding battle 39-26.
