Two more Menomonie products are headed to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Running back Justin Evans and defensive back Ben Newman signed their National Letters of Intent on Wednesday to play Division II college football.
Evans will play for Winona State, while Newman is off to Concordia-St. Paul.
Evans was the Leader-Telegram All-Northwest player of the year after running for 1,946 yards and 31 touchdowns as a senior. He was the Big Rivers Conference offensive player of the year and a WFCA all-state honorable mention.
Newman was a first-team All-Big Rivers pick.
Four more Mustangs committed to play for Division III St. Thomas, the reigning MIAC champion, on Wednesday. Outside linebacker Kevyn Perkins, tight end Kyle Stewart, receiver Brenden Johnston and running back John Brogan all are headed to the Tommies. Defensive back Dylan Hein will join them in the MIAC. He’ll play for Augsburg.
CALCHERA, JOHNSON ARE BULLDOGS: Eau Claire Memorial quarterback Keagan Calchera and Rice Lake offensive lineman Arik Johnson signed to play Division II football at Minnesota-Duluth, another Northern Sun school.
Calchera threw for 896 yards and eight touchdowns before his senior season was cut short by a broken collarbone.
Johnson was first-team All-Big Rivers and first-team All-Northwest.
MEINEN SIGNS FOR MUSTANGS: Chippewa Falls running back Codie Meinen also will head to the Northern Sun. Meinen signed to play for Southwest Minnesota State. The first-team All-Big Rivers and second-team All-Northwest selection ran for 893 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior.
DACHEL IS WINONA-BOUND: Bloomer offensive lineman Payton Dachel will join Evans at Winona State. Dachel was named first-team All-Heart O’North on both sides of the ball, second-team All-Northwest and WFCA all-region.
ELSEWHERE: Winona State’s class also included Barron offensive lineman Braxton Seemann and Hudson offensive lineman Carson Madigan. ... Stanley-Boyd’s Theo Chwala signed to play football for Minnesota State-Moorhead. Chwala was a first-team All-Cloverbelt OL and an All-Northwest special mention. Teammate Ben Boie committed to play for UW-Stout. ... At Regis, Laith Kidness committed to join the Menomonie contingent at St. Thomas, while Keelin Norman-Klatt committed to play basketball for Beloit College. Dayton Gutsch committed to play baseball for Hamline, while Zach Yengo committed to run cross country for UW-Eau Claire. Esme Reinders will play soccer for UW-Stevens Point. ... Altoona’s Kolten Wright committed to play football for North Dakota State College of Science.
