The ECA Stars are making their first trip to the state tournament after dismantling top-ranked Hudson 6-1 in Saturday’s sectional final. The team has the two leading scorers in the state in senior Abigail Stow (47 goals, 42 assists) and Ava Kison (41 goals, 34 assists). Kison leads the team with eight game-winning goals. Stow, a UW-River Falls recruit, was a finalist for Ms. Hockey, given to the top senior player in the state. Minnesota State-Mankato recruit Charlotte Akervik has nine goals and 17 assists despite missing the first two months of the season recovering from an offseason ACL injury. Freshman Naomi Stow had her best game of the season in net on Saturday, stopping 21 of 22 shots. For the year, she has a .910 save percentage with seven shutouts. Freshman Madison Schwengler has 12 goals and 13 assists, while Lauren Carmody has seven goals and 17 assists to lead the second line. Brooklynn Arbs and Stow are captains with Kison and Akervik as co-captains. Record is 24-3. Coached by UW-Eau Claire grad Tom Bernhardt, who coached the North boys to state in 2006. Assisted by former North coach Jordan Fish. ... The Stars’ semifinal opponent is Central Wisconsin, a team the Stars have gone 2-1 against this season. They beat the Storm 3-0 and 2-1 while falling 4-3. Central Wisconsin is making its 11th straight trip to state and won the title last season. The Storm also won in 2008 and 2012. This year’s team is led by Eden Gruber, who has 18 goals and seven assists on the year. Emelia Edmondson has 12 goals and 11 assists, while Trinity Foster has 10 goals. Chloe Westberg is the star in net with a 1.98 goals against average. Beat Marshfield 6-3 in sectional final. Coached by Pete Susens, who has a 639-251-27 record in 39 years of coaching with a 63-17-2 record with the Storm. “They are a team that I think is very similar to us,” Bernhardt said. “They’ve got good depth. Their defensive core is very strong, their goaltender played very well when they played against us a couple of weeks ago. They are a team that is very sound defensively and systems-wise. They’re not going to beat themselves. We had the luxury of going back to look at tape and learn from that, and hopefully that will pay off for us on Friday.” ... The Cap City Cougars make their second straight state appearance and third overall. Located centrally in Sun Prairie. Team has a 20-6-1 record. Led by Margo Thousand with 17 goals and 21 assists, and Amanda Bauer has 20 goals and 10 assists. Average 3.25 goals per contest and allow 1.91. Goalie is Taylor Thornton, who has a 1.82 goals against average with 361 saves on the year. Coached by Jeff Thornton. Knocked off Rock County 3-2 in sectional final after ousting Black River Falls 3-2 in semis. Cougars beat Chippewa Falls/Menomonie 6-3 and lost to Central Wisconsin 4-1. ... The Fond du Lac Warbirds have had various co-ops produce a pair of state titles and three runner-up finishes. Eleven different schools make up the co-op. With a 19-8 record, the Warbirds average 5.33 goals per contest and give up 2.41. Alyssa Heim has 35 goals and 23 assists on the year, while Hattie Verstegen has 26 goals and 30 assists. Abby Okon has an .897 save percentage. Knocked off University School of Milwaukee 5-2 in sectional final. Lost to ECA Stars 5-0 in mid-December in Eau Claire. Also lost to Central Wisconsin 5-2.
