College roundup (Feb. 28): Diekelman named All-WIAC for third time

UW-Eau Claire senior guard George Diekelman was named to the All-WIAC men’s basketball first team for the third consecutive season Wednesday.

Diekelman was the Blugolds’ leading scorer and ranked second in the conference at 16.2 points per game.

UW-River Falls senior Alex Herink, a Hudson graduate, also was named to the all-conference team.

Earning All-WIAC honorable mention were UW-Eau Claire senior forward Chris Duff and UW-Stout senior guard Isaac Elliott.

Duff averaged 15.0 points per game and was second in the conference with 60 made 3-pointers.

Elliott was the conference’s leading scorer at 16.6 points per game.

Conference champion UW-Platteville swept the awards. Robert Duax was named WIAC player of the year, while Jeff Gard was given coach of the year honors. The Pioneers are the first team in WIAC history to go from last place to first place in one season.

BASEBALL: Walker Rogers hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Augsburg University to an 8-5 win and a doubleheader sweep of UW-Stout in season-opening action Wednesday morning at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

The Blue Devils lost the first game 3-0 despite Max Sires pitching into the ninth inning.
