College roundup (March 4): Blugolds' Erickson runner-up at WIAC championships

UW-Eau Claire senior Tori Erickson finished as the runner-up in the all-around and on the balance beam Sunday at the WIAC Gymnastics Championships/​NCGA West Regional at St. Peter, Minn.

The Blugolds had their highest team score of the season and fourth-highest in program history (187.775). They also had season-best days on the uneven bars and balance beam. Ashley Benes scored a 9.625 on the vault — second-best in school history — to take fifth. Benes and Erickson will both compete at nationals.

UW-Stout freshman Shaquilla Payne won the vault title and tied a school record with a 9.800. The Blue Devils took eighth.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: UW-Eau Claire swept Macalester (Minn.) 9-0 at the Eau Claire YMCA in its first action since October. Natalie Wijesinghe and Sarah Henderson scored wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles and then paired up to win at No. 1 doubles.

MEN’S TENNIS: UW-Eau Claire beat Macalester (Minn.) 6-3 at the Eau Claire YMCA. Andrew Dahl and Danny Schoen won at Nos. 2 and 5 singles and paired up at No. 1 doubles for another victory.
