Track and field: UW-Stout's Elsner wins discus national title

UW-Stout’s Sam Elsner won the NCAA Division III discus national title Thursday on day one of the outdoor track and field championships in La Crosse. The senior set a school record with a throw of 191 feet, 7 inches on his first attempt.

All of his throws would have been good for the national championship. He broke Austin Zett’s record of 185-2, which was set in 2015. UW-Stout’s Kevin Ruechel took 13th in the discus with a 155-11 throw.

UW-Eau Claire’s Erica Oawster finished in second place in the discus throw. The junior launched a throw of 162 feet, 7 inches to secure a national runner-up finish.

Samantha Slattery narrowly missed the podium with a ninth-place finish in the 10K after finishing in 36:43.01, and Ashleigh Buergi took 14th in the 400-meter hurdles by clocking in at 1:03.22.

Megan Wallace sits in seventh place in the heptathalon with 2,699 points. Michael Amerlan is in 17th in the decathlon. David Kornack took 20th place in the men’s discus with a throw that went 135-04.
