College roundup (Sept. 5): Blugolds win five-set thriller

The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team came from behind to beat Saint Benedict (Minn.) in five sets with a 3-2 win on Wednesday in St. Joseph, Minn.

After the Blugolds won the first set 25-16, Saint Benedict responded by taking the second and third sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-17. UW-Eau Claire (5-0) rallied to stay unbeaten on the young season, edging St. Benedict 25-22 in the fourth set and taking the fifth 15-12. 

Kendra Baierl had 21 kills to lead the Blugolds, while Makenzie Bachmann had 26 digs and Madison Surprise had 55 assists.

UWEC soccer cruises to win

The UW-Eau Claire women’s soccer team scored two goals in both halves to pick up a 4-1 win over Macalester in its season opener Wednesday in Eau Claire.

Mercedes Wilson, Kayla Jedrzejewski, Monica Zoellner and Mary Wilhemy all scored for the Blugolds. UW-Eau Claire outshot the Scots 11-5.

UW-Stout took an early lead thanks to a 10th-minute goal by Bella Pedlar, but fell to St. Mary’s (Minn.) 2-1 after the Cardinals scored twice in the second half.
