The Chippewa Steel scored three times in the second period to finish off a weekend sweep of the Fairbanks Ice Dogs with a 3-2 win on Saturday in Chippewa Falls. Tomas Vochozka, Jacob Dirks and Connor Szmul scored for the Steel, who are now 2-0 in their first season. Josh Langford made 24 saves.
It was only minutes before the 36th annual Buckshot Run was scheduled to start and the skies poured down rain upon Carson Park. The situation did not look good. But the predicted longer soaking suddenly stopped. It was race time, 9 o’clock, Saturday morning. Somebody up there is looking out for us, was the general feeling of runners and officials. Bob Lesniewski, race director for the first event more than three decades back, knew who it was. But it was unanimous. Dan Conway was there
Adam Condit got an unexpected challenge. But he was able to meet it in Saturday morning’s Dan Conway 5-mile race of the 36th annual Buckshot Run at Carson Park presented by WIN Technology. Brent Kann was a late entry and joined Condit out in front of the pack of 235 runners with the outcome decided down the stretch. “We were even all through the first half, I got a few steps lead up to mile four and we were even again at the top of the hill (entering the park),”
The high humidity and rains that left puddles on the Carson Park blacktop affected the runners in the Buckshot Run 2-mile race, but it didn’t slow down Andrew Pathos and Mandi Risler. Both improved on last year’s times en route to winning the male and female races on Saturday at Carson Park. The course sent the 291 runners up East Half Moon Drive past the Paul Bunyan Camp, putting the first portion of the race — and most of the first mile — up hill.

There’ll be an empty space at the starting line of today’s 36th annual Buckshot Run. For sure, he will be there in spirit. That, of course, would be Dan Conway. He was there last year, for the 32nd time. He was there for the first 20 before being sidelined by an illness. By his own count, he missed only three of them. That’s only extraordinary in the fact that he didn’t come a few minutes from across town. He had to get up practically in the middle of the night to
