Diocesan Bishops

Ten bishops have lead the Diocese of La Crosse during the last 150 years.

• Bishop Michael Heiss, 1868 to 1880.

• Bishop Kilian Flasch, 1881 to 1891.

• Bishop James Schwebach, 1891 to 1921.

• Bishop Alexander McGavick, 1921 to 1948.

• Bishop John Patrick Treacy, 1945 to 1964.*

• Bishop Frederick Freking, 1965 to 1983.

• Bishop John Paul, 1983 to 1994.

• Bishop Raymond Burke, 1994 to 2003.

• Bishop Jerome Listecki, 2004 to 2009.

• Bishop William Patrick Callahan, 2010 to present.

* On Aug. 21, 1945, Pope Pius XII named John Patrick Treacy as coadjutor bishop of La Crosse. A coadjutor bishop is designated to assist the diocesan bishop in the governance of the diocese and has the right of succession.
