Andi Stempniak Drive by shooting in Rock Creek The shadow of homeowner Denise Hazen was visible Thursday on the front of her Rock Falls-area home as she talked about gunfire that hit the house Wednesday night. Police marked chips in the brick that appear to have been caused by .22-caliber bullets.

ROCK FALLS - It was a quiet evening, typical of the remote area near Rock Falls in southeastern Dunn County.

Denise Hazen was relaxing, watching television in the living room, when suddenly she heard her son Cody Hazen yell, "Get down! Get down!"

She then heard the sound of something breaking and what she thought were gunshots. She began turning lights off in the house and immediately called authorities.

An argument over the sale of some marijuana or a disagreement about a comment made about a girlfriend may have been the catalyst for a drive-by shooting Wednesday that shattered the calm of the Hazen family home, authorities said Thursday.

Four men have been arrested in the incident. They face felony charges in Dunn County of being party to first-degree reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm from a vehicle.

In custody are Tony A. Hurlburt, 19, Durand; James M. Hutter, 20, Arkansaw; Johnathon M. Hutter, 18, Arkansaw; and Spenser A. Weber, 19, Eau Claire.

According to the criminal complaints filed Thursday:

Dunn County authorities were called to a home at N1170 850th St. in the town of Rock Creek; at about 8:15 p.m. Denise Hazen reported a drive-by shooting at her home.

Deputies found eight .22-caliber shell casings near where the driveway residence meets 850th Street. A deputy also found a .22-caliber bullet on the kitchen floor.

There also appeared to be a bullet hole in the kitchen window of the single-family residence.

One bullet penetrated a window, hit a cabinet and damaged a porcelain doll, Hazen said.

Deputies found chip marks on the front of the house, which has a brick surface, consistent with bullet marks.

"It seemed like forever but really was extremely quick," Denise Hazen, 36, said Thursday afternoon about the shooting. "It's hard to believe someone would actually shoot at us."

A third person, Leah Stambaugh, Cody Hazen's girlfriend, reported she was in the basement of the home and did not see anything.

Denise Hazen said she asked Cody, a Durand High School senior, if he knew what might have caused the shooting.

Denise Hazen said her son had been text-messaging with Weber, and "Cody said something bad in the text, I guess."

During the shooting, Cody said: "I can't believe he's doing that," Denise Hazen said.

According to the complaint, Weber said Johnathon Hutter was angry at Cody Hazen for allegedly saying he hoped Weber's sister would die with her unborn child. The baby is Johnathon Hutter's child.

Cody Hazen, 18, told authorities he recently had an argument with Weber over some marijuana Weber had sold to a friend of Cody's. It was supposed to be 1 gram of marijuana but turned out to be one-half of a gram.

Weber allegedly left a voice-mail message with Cody Hazen telling him to come to Durand and fight Weber, which Cody Hazen did not do.

Stambaugh confirmed there was an altercation between Weber and Cody Hazen on Monday in Durand.

Weber was arrested at his parents' home in Durand by Durand police shortly after the incident. He allegedly told police the four men went to Cody Hazen's house in James Hutter's car.

James Hutter was stopped for a loud muffler by Eau Claire police and was arrested Thursday. The car was seized.

Johnathon Hutter and Hurlburt were arrested Thursday.

Weber allegedly told authorities that Johnathon Hutter shot a handgun from the back seat of the car.

Dunn County sheriff's deputies and State Patrol troopers were at the scene from about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday until 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Denise Hazen said.

"It will be nice to get some sleep tonight, knowing the police know who did this," said Denise, who moved from Eau Claire to the rural area near Rock Falls about 10 years ago.

"It's usually pretty quiet out here, but not last night."

Apparently, the posters for this story do not know the Hazen boys. This story could easily have been about them! Believe me, they are no angels!!! I'm not saying they or their mother deserved this, but we reap what we sow. Maybe the authorities should also look into the activities of Cody Hazen to find out what brought this on in the first place. Then people might not be so surprised!!!!!

Boy CowBoy said it all for me. This country should just get rid of courts and line 'em up like he said. Everybody knows them Dirt Balls done it but now there gonna get new clothes and free meals and dental care and everything. No one is giving the victims anything. They should get something, but no tax dollars should go for it because that would be socialism. We need to get rid of illegal aliens and all the liberals. We should build more prisons and get tough on crime. But that won't happen because the liberal media won't let it happen. This is a bad deal. We can't even get a flu shot!

Really what bin the world is this world coming to?? Now just lets see what these Dirt Balls get? I bet a Fine which they probably can't pay, probably a slap on the wrist because it was probably there first time or something stupid like that. if they spend time in jail , Cable TV, Excercise Room, 3 good meals, and dental and health paid for, there is really something wrong wioth this picture. What should happen line them up against a wall and have a drive by on them! This country has gotten so relaxed on crime, innocent are the ones that gets the raw end of the deal.
