The threat of a military strike is having the positive effect of bringing Syrian leaders to the negotiating table, says a UW-Eau Claire political science professor of Middle Eastern and global politics.

Ali Abootalebi said the fear of a U.S. airstrike led to Syrian leaders announcing Monday a willingness to give up its chemical weapons stockpile for it to be destroyed. An airstrike was possible as early as this week, but it appears it will be delayed as President Barack Obama waits to see if he has support from Congress.
