A 22-year-old Osseo woman was charged with first-degree reckless homicide Monday in Trempealeau County in connection with the June death of a 22-month-old girl.
Amanda M. Butts, who was arrested on Thursday, will make her initial appearance Monday afternoon in Trempealeau County Court.
Butts had been baby-sitting Alexis Behlke on June 22 and called 911 to report that the girl had stopped breathing.
Behlke was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System-Oakridge in Osseo, where she was pronounced dead at 2:38 a.m.
Butts admitted to authorities she gave the girl oxycodone, a narcotic used to treat pain, and she knew it was “wrong and could cause her death.”
That same day, two children witnessed Butts throw the toddler to the floor.
The child had a number of injuries to various parts of her body, according to Dr. Vincent Tranchida, Dane County’s chief medical examiner.
The girl died “from an acute intoxication due to the combined effects of oxycodone, diphenhydramine and amitriptyline, with ensuing loss of consciousness, respiratory depression, apnea, coma, anoxic brain injury and ultimately death.”
Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine, and amitriptyline is an antidepressant.
