A contentious bill designed to allow iron ore mining in northern Wisconsin's Penokee Range would relax regulations protecting not only that region's waterways but potentially those in the rest of the state.

Few metallic mines have been permitted in Wisconsin in recent decades because of federal and state laws precluding mining operations from adversely affecting waterways and wetlands.
