Yes, who really cares what these people think anyway? Stop your whining. Leave the mascot as is. Boring.

--- This particular complaint is utterly ridiculous. Using the name "Chieftains" is NOT mentioning any particular Indian tribe, nor is it used in a derogatory manner. How can anyone say this is an offensive use of a native american name? Why would anyone think this brings to mind the so called raging, spear wielding stereotype? I don't think it would unless you are just looking for a cause to stir or get attention from.
--- What this appears really to be is some ultra liberals wanting for attention and trying to make a name for themselves. If the native american tribes are not contesting the use of it then why are these whiners trying to make hay from it? What tribe are they from? The Gunderson Liberal Whiners?

Yeah, this is such B.S. Please see this story for a very good description of the situation in OF.

Eric -- please read this article and attend an Osseo-Fairchild game and see just how many "images" you see. Their logo is "OF", I don't see how this is offensive, so what you are arguing by including that quote is that the word "Chieftain" is one dimensional, raging, spear-wielding, etc., etc.

Nice try, but try picking on a district or school that fits your stereotype of the "white man" putting down Native Americans.

BTW, many want to be called Anishinaabe instead of Native American. Anishinaabe means "First" or "Original People".

I don't think anybody out there today has that stereotype of Native Americans. I think there is only admiration and respect. If the majority of Native Americans feel the logos and mascots are offensive we have to respect that opinion. I think it has to be entirely up to the Native American community however, not perceived political correctness of feigned outrage from other groups.

Harvey and Carol should be happy now...they, like so many these days cried out for attention, but received none. Feel sorry for them, don't be judgemental--even if they are. I, for most of my adult life, have felt strongly that schools should have NO mascot names, period. It's silly. Here's a radical thought. How about a huge O-F in orange and black with a slick, colorful graphic design honoring the people and businesses who truly support the school sports' teams? Now, pause and consider before laughing this off. It's simple, no one could challenge it with a straight face, even those like Harvey and Carol, and it would truly honor those who actually deserve the credit for supporting the school.
I'm somewhat disappointed a "Dean" of whatever, with all his (or her) education wouldn't come up with an idea like this and when is the last time you saw a native american and were reminded of a "raging, spear-wielding, bareback-riding, cowboy killing, woo-woo warrior? When I talk with or go fishing with or attend a sports event with a native american (mostly members of the Ho-Chunk Nation), I think of them as neighbors, friends and in my case, grandparents just like me, who work hard, enjoy life and support our area schools as much as possible. I can't remember the last time I pictured Al, James or John racing across the plains bareback (wouldn't that chafe alot?) carrying spears, killing cowboys and woo-wooing. I did laugh alot at Al last year though when he slipped at the local ice arena during a youth hockey game. Probably those darn moccasins again! Get rid of all mascots--and home school your kids after graduation of high school...

The below comments reveal an ignorance towards this issue. I can think of a quotation that gets at the heart of this problem:

“The harm here is not that all Native American nicknames are insults, it's that nearly all of them freeze Native Americans in an all-encompassing, one-dimensional pose: the raging, spear-wielding, bareback-riding, cowboy-killing, woo-woo-wooing warriors this country has caricatured, demonized, and tried mightily to exterminate.”

I went to Chi-Hi. I was always offended we had a wimpy cardinal as our mascot instead of something powerful and respected like a Chieftain. I want to file a complaint against the Chippewa school district as the fragility of the cardinal mascot hurt my feelings and caused insecurity. What the heck is going on here? I would love to be from a special group such as Native Americans and have my heritage used as a sign of strength. Unfortunately, I am a member of the boring Caucasion community.

With all the other issues around. People loosing home, jobs farms and such. You pick this as your "signature" issue? I have always viewed most of these logos/mascots as honoring the great tradition of native Americans. Granted some names were poorly chosen. This it not one of those.

    Nothing to see here...move on.
