When I Grow Up
I want to be a movie star
I’ll never go to the bar
Like Joan Cusack I’ll make good money
It’s simple; I’ll be really funny
I will get married
My kids will get carried
I’ll go to the mall
Then maybe go play basketball
I’ll still like to sing
While I wait for the phone to ring
— Alexa Gutshall

Trying to catch a ball
Then I fall

Baking
There once was a cake
That I really had to bake
My sister Muriel helped
As the dog yelped
Then mom came in
To see the cake bin
It was full to the tip top
Then the cake went blop
The cake tasted horrible
And I felt really terrible

When I’m by myself and I close my eyes
I can be whatever I choose to be …
I’m a pilgrim on the sturdy old Mayflower.
I’m a director yelling “Cut!” at my cast and crew.
I’m an old wizard casting spells.
I’m an apple tree giving delicious fruits.
I’m elderly, weary and have wrinkles too.
I’m young, energetic, in good shape as well.
I’m Neptune guarding the mythical underwater city of Atlantis.
I’m a classmate glumly taking my fourth-grade test.
I’m an eyeball spinning and watching things wildly.
And when I open my eyes what I choose to be is me.
— James Goings
When I’m by myself and close my eyes
I can be whatever I choose to be …
I am a phone ringing in my pocket.
I am a dog barking in the backyard.
I am a book in the library waiting to be read.
And when I open my eyes what I choose to be is me.
— Rachael LeBarron
When I’m by myself and I close my eyes
I can be whatever I choose to be …
I am an Indian gathering berries for winter.
I am the beautiful American flag waving in the air.
I am a red boat sailing across the ocean.
I am the black stallion galloping free with his herd.
I am the capitol proudly serving Wisconsin.
And when I open my eyes what I choose to be is me.
— Danielle Nelson
When I’m by myself and I close my eyes
I can be whatever I choose to be …
I’m a hunter shooting the biggest deer.
I’m a fisherman catching a giant muskie.
I’m a bass searching for food in the river.
I’m a deer sprinting from a hunter in the woods.
I’m bait sailing through the air, splashing down.
I’m a skateboarder doing a 360.
And when I open my eyes what I choose to be is me.
— Calvin Mayer
I do not understand …
Why there are so many parts in an engine.
Why we only have a 20-minute recess.
Why we don’t have a Wisconsin flag at our school.
But most of all I do not understand why we have illegal drugs,
Because they’re bad for you and could kill you.
What I understand most is bikes,
Because I ride and fix them all the time.
— Dylan Guse
