Bertrum Dawson

Bertrum Lee Dawson, age 89, of Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls passed away at Chippewa Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation in Chippewa Falls on Monday, Oct. 15, 2007.

He was born May 6, 1918, to Lee and Cordelia (Bartz) Dawson, in Nevada, Iowa.

He leaves behind his daughter, Kay Dawson; his companion, Vivian Mercier and her four children; his grandchildren, David (Patti) O'Dell, Lee (Kaci) Dawson, David Dawson, Daniel (Renee) Dawson, Janelle (John) Huizenga, Tessa Dawson, Jillian Dawson, Tim (Wendy) Lulloff and Ginny (Bill) Rusch; his great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews. All will miss the patriarch of the family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his four siblings; his sons, Barnard and Kelly; his daughter, Delia; his son-in-law, Lawrence W. Durning; and his wife, Carol.

Bert was a man of many talents. In his lifetime, he waited on tables and was a member of the Civil Conservation Corps and the U.S. Army Air Force. He also was employed as a civilian cartographer for the Army. He was a watchmaker, jeweler and hand engraver, working for Lasker's jewelry store and other area stores, as well as doing freelance repair after he retired. His skills covered the gamut of design engineer, radio and TV repairman, artist, teacher, machinist/tool maker, draftsman, ham radio operator (WA9VXE) and inventor. His patented inventions were utilized by corporations, in particular National Presto Industries, where he was employed for a number of years as a test engineer.

Bert, in the tradition of early radio days, was a spinner of tall tales; and last but not least, one of his earliest talents was a taster for moonshine — his first 'job' during the Great Depression.

Bert had a passion for learning and was a man of great wisdom. He understood the dynamics of biology, as well as the most complicated of clocks and other mechanical gadgets. If it was broken, Bert could fix it, often making the part to repair the object. His skills were astonishing. He truly was a Renaissance man. He will be missed by family, friends and colleagues.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel in Chippewa Falls, with the Rev. Fr. Robert Hoekstra, chaplain of the Chippewa Manor Retirement Community, officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Chippewa Falls, with military rites conducted by the Chippewa Falls Patriotic Council.
