On February 3, 1936 Max & Gesina Kreuz welcomed their first daughter, Dolores Marilyn (forever known as Dody.) Since Max was a professional violinist in Chicago, Dody spent her young childhood listening to and appreciating classical music.
After Max achieved his dream of owning land in Northern Wisconsin, Dody began attending school in New Auburn. While Max traveled on the 400 trains back & forth to Chicago, Dody and her mother adjusted to country living on lower Long Lake by New Auburn, WI.
During Dody’s years at New Auburn High School, Max & Gesina built a small bar & grill on adjacent land they owned on Long Lake. Max’s Resort was established in 1950, and gradually cabins were built and the bar enlarged. Along with her family, Dody helped to cook, clean, bartend & to perform any needed tasks involved in obtaining a successful business.
Upon graduation, Dody attended the teachers’ college in Eau Claire, WI and became an elementary school teacher in Waterford, Chetek, Mondovi, Wausau, and Janesville. During those days she met and married Merlyn Rabe, a driver’s education and agriculture teacher in the Beloit School System. Dody & her husband resided in Beloit where she taught in various schools there until her retirement – 30 years of teaching total. (Amazingly, some of her former students found her in later years writing glowing letters of appreciation and sending flowers & gifts on a regular basis to her – recognizing her superb teaching ability.) When her husband died of cancer, Dody purchased a condo in Eau Claire, WI to be closer to her sisters, Darlene & Maxine.
One memorable day in Dody’s past occurred when her son, Dan, appeared in her life – finding her after many years – and becoming part of her family.
And what did Dody like to do? She LOVED shopping! She LOVED collecting a massive amount of dolls! She LOVED the Badgers! As a season ticket holder for the Badger football team, she attended most home games, Rose Bowls in 1994, 2000, 2011, and the 2000 Sun Bowl & 2007 Capital One Bowl with her husband or her nephew George J Glass. Dody even had a Badger bedroom, car and golf cart. Oh, she LOVED talking too – to anyone – anytime – anywhere!
AND MOSTLY she loved her family resort on Long Lake – Max’s!! Dody never missed a summer at Max’s. Though she traveled extensively to places like Germany, Australia, Hawaii & Mexico during school vacations and in retirement, her sanctuary was Max’s where she helped run the business, but also swam, sunbathed, pontooned & relaxed. One could even say that she lived for Max’s and Long Lake.
Dody was a good daughter and sister. She enjoyed giving many gifts to her family and taking her sisters on trips to fun destinations.
When she discovered she had bone cancer (multiple myeloma) in the fall of 2014 and endured chemo and rehabilitation in a nursing home, her sisters moved her from her condo to their resort full-time. Darlene and Maxine assisted and cared for her until the fall of 2017 – when her cancer reoccurred along with a tumor pushing on her brain. As her health declined steadily, life became much more difficult. The disease ravaged her body – and her mind. Finally, her journey was ending as she entered the hospital for 10 days and Azura Memory Care for 6 days.
Dody’s life on Earth ended at 2:30 AM on December 4, 2017 – and she was never able to return to her beloved Max’s and Long Lake again. But her presence (along with Max and Gesina’s) will be felt as her spirit lives on – watching over Max’s forever.
