George James Vobornik, 73, died Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Comforts of Home in Hudson, WI.

George was born on August 6, 1944 to George C. and Morine (Huse) Vobornik in Rice Lake, WI. The family moved from their farm near Weyerhauser to Eau Claire when he was in the second grade. He graduated from Memorial High School in 1962. After graduation, George served honorably in the U.S. Air Force. He was assigned to the 832nd Air Police Squadron K-9 Section as a sentry dog handler and was stationed in Texas, New Mexico, California and Thailand, as were his canine partners. Canine companions remained a constant throughout George’s life, although training was modified considerably for his civilian pets. George was a member of VFW Post 305.

After the USAF, George met and married Maxine Mork. A few years into their marriage, they were blessed with daughter Angie. The family traveled to Canada, Mexico and both coasts and camped throughout Wisconsin. George was an enthusiastic traveler and always eager to learn about and see new places, as well as visit and make friends with the people he met along the way. He also delighted in revisiting special places that were new to his family or extended family. After 10 years, George and Max separated to live independent lives but always remained close. In later years, George traveled extensively throughout the western and southern United States with his brother, Larry. They enjoyed settling temporarily in Montana and later in Florida before returning to Eau Claire.

George was a graduate of the former District One Technical Institute, now CVTC, from which he received an outstanding student award. He worked in computer operations for National Presto Industries, City of Eau Claire and Eau Claire County. He retired sooner than planned in his career due to serious back problems stemming from an earlier injury. Despite two surgeries, unresolved pain seriously impacted George’s quality of life. Sadly, the ever-present sparkle in his eyes faded through the years.

George is survived by his daughter Angie (Mike) Zehm of Tampa, FL; grandchildren Nicole Sather, Eau Claire, Lauren, Erin, and Evan Zehm of Tampa, FL; brothers Jim (Karen) Vobornik and Larry (Diane) Vobornik, both of Eau Claire; nephews Ben (Jen) Vobornik of Hayward, Ryan (Stephanie) Vobornik, Eau Claire; nieces Laura (Brad) Villand of La Crosse, Emily Vobornik of Peoria, IL; and former wife Maxine Mork, Eau Claire. He is further survived by grandnieces, grandnephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded by his parents and grandnephew Wylan Vobornik.

A celebration of life for George is planned at VFW Post 305, 1300 Starr Avenue, Eau Claire, on June 30, 2018, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., with military honors by the American Legion Honor Guard. Burial is at Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Spooner, WI.

Chippewa Valley Cremation Services in Altoona is serving the family.
