Sand mine boom impact hitting close to home

The Eau Claire City Council did the right thing last week by holding off on approving a company's request to use a rail spur on the city's far north side as a transfer point to load sand that would be shipped out of state to meet the skyrocketing demand for it in oil extraction.

Dozens of sand mine operations have popped up rather quickly in this part of Wisconsin because the sand here is effective in getting oil and gas out of the ground via hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking.
