Joseph J. Diemert, 91, of Eau Claire, and formerly of Valley City, North Dakota, died Thursday, September 30, 2010, at Syverson Lutheran Home in Eau Claire.
His engaging spirit was testament to the central importance of family, friends and community in his life. He was born in Barnes County, North Dakota on June 21, 1919, the son of George and Barbara (Kronebusch) Diemert. He graduated from high school in Eckelson, N. D. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's and served in the U S Army on the Pacific front during World War II.
Joseph married Irene A. Kjelland on June 20, 1946, in Sanborn, N.D. Irene and Joseph lived in Edgeley and LaMoure N.D. where he was the manager of the Farmers Union Oil Companies (Cenex) and active in many community and church organizations. His service on credit union boards, community change efforts and political activities was directed toward being a voice for underrepresented groups. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, VFW Council, and the Lions Club, often serving in leadership positions. He was awarded a lifetime blood donor certificate by the American Red Cross. During his retirement years, Joe volunteered hair cutting services at a nursing home in LaMoure and tree-planting services for soil conservation purposes. Joe enjoyed hosting many family and friend gatherings with his wife, Irene. He delighted in crafting and offering gifts of his woodworking.
Joseph is survived by his six children, Carol (Steve Rider) Diemert of St. Paul, MN, Susan (Michael) Moch of Eau Claire, Tim (Myrna) Diemert of Friendship, WI, Thomas (Mary) Diemert of Lake Shore, MN, Paul (Laurie) Diemert of Eau Claire, and Todd Diemert of Deerwood, MN; eight grandchildren, Terri (Rob) Fuchsteiner, Erika (Jathan) Manley, Kevin (Deb) Diemert, Wendy (Chad) Lorentz, Nate (Jessica) Moch, Katie (Tyler) Rogers, Keith and Collin Diemert; four great-grandchildren, Brie, Cameron, Jack Joseph and Hailey; and many special nieces; nephews; sisters-in-law; and friends from North Dakota and Colombia, South America.
