The No. 12-ranked Badgers dump Ohio State, 12-3, getting a 7-yard TD run from Dale Hackbart and an interception by Hobbs that sets up a field goal.
Also 50 years ago this month, Regis defeats Minneapolis De La Salle, 21-7, behind the passing of Jim Nispel, while Pete Ihle and Jim Fering get two of the TDs. But the Ramblers' five-game win streak comes to an end in a 20-6 loss to national power Boys Town, Neb. Bob Ganka gets the Regis TD.
Bob Gelein scores three TDs as Memorial, ranked No. 7 in the state, clips Stevens Point, 33-21, but Abes miscues prove critical in a 27-7 loss to Sioux Falls (S.D.) Washington. Don "Pinky" Lee drills an 18-yard field goal with 4 seconds to go as the Blugolds nip River Falls, 9-6. Dick Odegaard's 24-yard run sets up the kick.
In the World Series, the Dodgers beat the White Sox in six games. In the final, the Dodgers win 9-3 as Larry Sherry gets his second win and Duke Snider raps two homers. Senators owner Calvin Griffith decides against a move to Minneapolis and will stay in Washington next season. Andy Pafko, the Boyceville native, retires after 17 years in the National League and will be a Milwaukee Braves coach.
Chetek's Denny Overby makes the Nebraska Rookie League all-star team following an 8-2 season with a 2.71 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 93 innings. Eau Claire veteran Denny O'Melia goes 10-6 at Plainview, Texas, a farm club of the Royals. Charlie Dressen is named manager of the Milwaukee Braves.
Paul Hornung rushes for 138 yards and a TD as the Packers beat the 49ers, 21-20, but later the Baltimore Colts knock the Packers out of first, 38-21, as Alan "The Horse" Ameche scores two Colt TDs. NFL Commissioner Bert Bell, 65, dies of a heart attack.
John Tingvold hits a 702 series in the Starlite, while women are led by Ruth Lehman's 609 and a 601 by Marg Legge.
Elgin Baylor scores 52 points in a Minneapolis Lakers loss. Wilt Chamblerlain makes his NBA debut and scores 43 points and grabs 28 rebounds as the Warriors beat the Knicks, 118-109.

No. 2-ranked Eau Claire Memorial routs La Crosse Central, 59-6, as Gregg Bohlig passes for five TDs and Tom Poquette scores four. Richie Hagen catches 10 passes for two TDs as the Abes top North, 45-6. But in a clash of two of the state's top-ranked teams, Wausau upsets Memorial, 13-6, at Wausau.
North tops Logan, 24-0 for its first win behind TDs by Mike Nicolai, Mike Beaulieu, Steve Jacobson and Randy Gutsch. McDonell's Jeff Pulver kicks a 27-yard field goal with 4 minutes to play to beat Marshfield Columbus, 3-0, and then comes back with a last-second 20-yarder for a 20-18 win over Wausau Newman to keep the Macks unbeaten.
Fall Creek nips Gilman, 10-8, on a 35-yard field goal by Steve Wilhelm with 1 second remaining. Tom Culver fires four TD passes as Bloomer beats Chetek, 53-13, to clinch the Heart o' the North title. Durand, ranked No. 1 among small schools, sees its 36-game win streak snapped in a 20-14 loss to River Falls. Mike Jenkins' 3-yard run with 22 seconds left is the game-winner.
Regis beats Assumption, 15-12, on Dave Miller's 3-yard run; Pete Koupal fires two TD passes to Pete Meinholz for a 13-0 win over Newman and the Ramblers finish with a 12-6 win over Pacelli as John Prock and Greg Fisher score the TDs in a 6-2-1 season. Steve Mersch and Doug Stratton team up for 334 rushing yards as Menomonie defeats North, 20-9.
Dennis Barneson throws three TD passes to Ron Bue as Eleva-Strum belts Augusta, 36-12. Altoona tops Holcombe, 30-6, on TDs by Bob Bohn, Jim Thalacker, Bob Pecore and Duane Hugdahl. Ken Obermueller passes for 208 yards and four TDs as Colfax rallies from a 22-0 deficit to beat Elk Mound, 36-22. The Wausau schools are considering leaving the Big Rivers to rejoin the Wisconsin Valley.
Madison goes wild as Neil Graf passes 18 yards to Randy Marks with 2:06 left to give the Badgers a 23-17 win over Iowa, snapping a string of 18 consecutive losses. It was coach John Coatta's first win in 24 games. Memorial product Phil Hagen hits on 26 of 46 passes for 304 yards but the school records are to no avail in Minnesota's 34-7 loss to No. 1 Ohio State, which had allowed an average of just 203 yards coming into the game. The Gophers are done in by six turnovers.
Hudson's Jim Bertelsen is the top rusher at 5.8 yards per carry for No. 2 Texas and he is rated among the top sophomores in the nation. Tom Bauer runs for two TDs and passes for another and Terry Strand makes a key fourth down tackle to stop a late threat and the Blugolds beat Stevens Point, 21-16.
The Twins are eliminated in three straight games by the Orioles in the league playoffs, but the Orioles fall to the Mets 5-3 in the final game and the Mets take the World Series in five games. Jerry Koosman goes all the way for his second win of the series. There are rumors that the struggling Seattle franchise could be moved to Milwaukee next year. Ted Williams leads the Senators to their first winning season in 17 years and is named AL Manager of the Year.
Gordie Howe, 41, gets his 800th goal as the Red Wings beat the St. Louis Blues, 4-2.
Stir Wagner fires a 708 in the Arrowhead and Vernice Lemke leads women with a 607 in the Ladies Classic.
In the 13-year-old Punt, Pass and Kick division, Dan Donnellan is first, Allen Olson second and Mark Faanes third.

The Pirates take the final game, 4-1, for a third straight win and top the Orioles in the World Series with Willie Stargell, 38, the MVP. The Yankees fire Billy Martin as manager a second time after he punches out a guy in a Bloomington Hotel. Willie Mays leaves baseball as a coach of the Mets to take a job in an Atlantic City gambling casino. Joe Torre re-signs as manager of the Mets. Tom Poquette finishes the season with a 7-for-13 Red Sox doubleheader with the Tigers that includes four doubles and winds up the season with a .311 average.
Altoona blanks Thorp, 20-0, with Brian Manor and Mark Horan rushing for scores and Rick Dahl passing to Jerome Lanners for the other. Thorp is hurt by the loss of outstanding backs Gary Pszeniczny and Bob Czech in the first quarter. The Rails clinch a first-ever championship with a 29-28 win over Cornell as Lanners scores on an 83 punt return and 50 kickoff runback, Dean Manney on a 65-yard run and Manor on a 23-yard pass from Dahl.
Mondovi claims its fourth straight Middle Border title with a 40-12 win over Hudson and QB Jess Cole closes his career with 5,063 total yards and 52 TDs. The Heart o' the North title goes to unbeaten Rice Lake as Tim Hovde scores three TDs in a 20-6 win over Spooner.
North upsets Stevens Point, 23-14, on TD runs by Steve Flynn and Pat Reed and Ken Faanes' pass to Reed and close a 6-3 season with a 21-0 win over St. Paul Highland Park for a fifth straight triumph.
The Abes get TDs by Brad Burling and Fritz Lowry in the final 7 minutes to beat Superior, 32-28, and finish a 7-2 season with a 34-24 win over Wisconsin Rapids as QB Bart Hill and Brad Hoffman hook up on nine completions for 132 yards and three TDs. Dave Geissler completes 21 of 37 passes for 177 yards and two TDs to lead McDonell to a 21-14 win over Regis.
Stout holds the Blugolds to 115 yards and forces eight turnovers for a 23-0 shutout with Steve Burr rushing for 100 yards. The Blugolds, down 10 points in the final minutes, bounce back to nip Oshkosh on Dave Blank's 36-yard field goal with no time remaining and then down La Crosse 30-24 in sudden-death overtime on Jeff Roth's 1-yard run with 11:44 to play.
DB Mickey Casey from Regis is among the tackle leaders for the Badgers. Memorial product Marty Stein is the leader of the Minnesota line and eyes a shot at the pros.
In the CART 150 at Atlanta, Rick Mears is the winner and Eau Claire's Herm Johnson is seventh.
Reed Zuehlke, 18, is the winner in the two-day ski jumping on plastic at Madison with a long jump of 203 feet. North's girls win the tennis sectional and head to state with Terri Running, Jean Emerson, Diane Chartier, Joan Pedersen, Jenni Sneen and Lynn Kissinger.
Jim Wampler is third overall and leads the Abes to the BRC cross country title. Led by Mike Golden, Regis takes third in the CWCC cross country run. John Vodacek wins the Sheriff's 6-miler in 30:41. Mike Wirz fires a 704 bowling series at Wagner's and Karen Johnson hits a 616 in the Ladies Sport.
The Packers upset the Patriots, 27-14, on Monday Night football as QB David Whitehurst runs for one TD and passes for another.

An earthquake in San Francisco moments before the third game of the World Series forces an 11-day delay and the Oakland A's go on to sweep the Giants with Dave Stewart winning two games to gain MVP honors.
The Packers rally from a 21-6 deficit to defeat the Falcons, 23-21, on a 22-yard field goal by Chris Jacke with 1:42 to play. Don Majkowski passes for 295 yards and a TD. The Vikings trade the farm for Herschel Walker and in his first game, he runs for 168 yards in a 26-14 win over the Packers. Tim Krumrie gets his 99th straight start and registers eight tackles in the Bengals' 20-13 loss to the Dolphins. Paul Tagliabue is named NFL commissioner.
Ken Anderson names Terry Gibbons, head coach and bus driver at Western (Colo.) State, as his new assistant. Brian Betzold of North and Stephanie Farrell of Memorial are the BRC cross country champions. In the state meet, Farrell finishes ninth and teammate Julie Mueller 10th. Regis scores a 4-1 volleyball win over Immanuel Lutheran with Leigh Murphy and Laura Jones among those leading the way. Senior Lisa Bandelin and freshman Elizabeth Weld score two wins each to lead Memorial to a swim win over North. The Abes win the tennis sectional and head to state led by the championship doubles team of Ellen Ricklefs and Erika Stenzel.
Matt Annis runs for a record 260 yards and three TDs as North beats Menomonie, 30-13, while the Abes beat Hudson, 28-14, with the aid of a Jeff Schemberger-to-Karl Clark 71-yard scoring pass.
North routs Memorial, 41-13, with Annis scoring four TDs and the Huskies go into the playoffs for a 15-14 win over Superior with Luke Strand and Ken Jasper scoring TDs but are ousted by D.C. Everest, 43-14. River Falls beats Memorial, 28-0, to clinch the Big Rivers title but the Wildcats lose in the playoffs to La Crosse Central, 15-14, in the final seconds and retiring coach Tom Carroll finishes with 100 victories.
The Blugolds dump Stout, 41-26, as John Clark passes for 353 yards and Chris Herzog runs for 109. The Badgers down Northwestern, 35-31, for a second win with Leon Hunt and Jimmy Henderson running for over 100 yards. 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat dies at age 19.
Wayne Gretzky, 28, breaks Gordie Howe's NHL scoring record with two goals in a Los Angeles win over Edmonton, giving him 1,852. Darrell Jones fires a 723 bowling series in the Indianhead and Kurt Hanke has a 704.
McDonell downs Pacelli, 44-20, as Ben Gardow completes 25 of 49 passes for 365 yards and four TDs. In playoff football, Augusta beats Greenwood, 49-7, as Mike Bechtel runs for 167 yards and three scores. Elk Mound beats Stratford and coach Cal Tackes, 31-14, on second-half passes by W.J. Vincent and after Fall Creek downs St. Croix Central, 12-3, with Lance Wright and Bruce Cota getting TDs, Elk Mound tops Fall Creek, 21-14, with Charlie Storing making a key interception and scoring twice.
