LA CROSSE — UW-La Crosse has appointed new leaders in the Student Life Office, with Greg Phlegar taking the position of dean of students and Kara Ostlund named assistant dean of students. Phlegar is associate dean of students at Clemson University in South Carolina. His position at UW-L will begin July 24, overseeing the Office of Student Life, including student conduct, Title IX, first-year experience, violence and prevention, wellness and academic support case managers.
MADISON — Health officials are confirming Wisconsin’s first documented death from Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The state Department of Health Services announced Tuesday the tick-borne disease has killed a La Crosse woman. La Crosse County public health nurse Jo Foellimi said the woman was bit while camping in western Wisconsin in early May. The woman was diagnosed with Rocky Mountain spotted fever in mid-June and died days later. Foellimi said the woman was in her late 50s but
U.S. Rep. Ron Kind unveiled a blueprint Monday for protecting the Mississippi River, the second such plan he’s announced in the past nine months. The plan, created in collaboration with Kind’s River Advisory Board, focuses on restoring the aging lock and dam system while protecting and restoring the river ecosystem. “The Mississippi River shapes Wisconsin’s environment and local economy,” the La Crosse Democrat said in a statement accompanying the four-point plan.
Minnesota prosecutors charged two men with La Crosse ties Tuesday in the fatal shooting of a man at a Hmong festival Sunday. Twenty-seven-year-old Nougai Xiong, of St. Paul, is charged in Ramsey County District Court with second-degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Jacky Vue, of St. Paul. Twenty-eight-year-old Yang Xiong, of La Crosse, is charged with aiding and abetting the shooting. Both men were in the Ramsey County jail Monday. Nougai Xiong was also being held on an out-of-state
