ATLANTA — Stand or stay out of sight. Looking to quell a national debate that was sparked by Colin Kaepernick, stoked by President Donald Trump and some say chipped away at the very popularity of America’s game, NFL owners approved a new policy Wednesday that allows players to protest during the national anthem by staying in the locker room but forbids them from sitting or taking a knee if they’re on the field. Commissioner Roger Goodell called it a compromise aimed at
GREEN BAY — Aaron Rodgers’ eventful offseason included a trip to India to see the spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, and a pit stop to watch his girlfriend, race car driver Danica Patrick, at Daytona. He also purchased a minority stake in the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks. This week, it’s back to the practice field for the two-time NFL MVP. On-field offseason workouts have started for the Green Bay Packers. They are especially important for a team that has had a lot of change
GREEN BAY — For a host of rookies, the road to a spot on the Packers’ roster began on Friday. While what they did during the first of two post-draft rookie orientation camp practices won’t decide their fates, coach Mike McCarthy believes a good start is vital for them all. All eyes were on the team’s top two draft picks, Jaire Alexander, a cornerback from Louisville, and Josh Jackson, a cornerback from Iowa. The practices included 11 draft picks, 14 undrafted free-agent
Jack Cichy’s long road to recovery led to a sixth-round selection in the NFL Draft. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected the former Wisconsin inside linebacker and Somerset native with the 202nd overall pick Saturday despite Cichy missing the last season and a half with injuries. “I’m prepared for whatever’s going to happen,” Cichy said in March of his draft position. “I’m prepared to earn my way onto a 53-man roster any way I can, whatever it takes.
GREEN BAY — To get back to the playoffs, the Green Bay Packers’ defense needs to improve against the pass. Adding three tall receivers to the offense for quarterback Aaron Rodgers can’t hurt either. The two-time NFL MVP got help in the passing game on the third day of the NFL draft after the Packers prioritized pass defense in the early rounds. General manager Brian Gutekunst drafted three wideouts, starting with Missouri’s J’Mon Moore in the fourth round.
EAGAN, Minn. — The Minnesota Vikings selected Central Florida cornerback Mike Hughes with the 30th pick in the first round on Thursday night, resisting temptation to pass up a premium position while counting on depth in the pool of offensive linemen to help them later in the draft. Hughes played only one season for UCF, helping the Knights finish undefeated in 2017 with four interceptions, 11 pass breakups and four touchdown returns. He scored twice on kickoff returns, once off an
A new general manager is in charge of making the picks in the NFL draft this year for the Green Bay Packers, who are stocked with new faces on the coaching staff. So many changes this offseason and yet the Packers will have familiar priorities when the draft starts tonight. Think defense, again. The secondary could use a cornerback or versatile safety. The pass rush could use another athletic presence off the edge. “There will be some different people sitting in some different chairs.
NEW YORK — Super Bowl champion Philadelphia will host Atlanta to kick off the 2018 NFL season on Thursday night, Sept. 6. Green Bay hosts Chicago in the first Sunday night matchup on Sept. 9, while the Monday nighters on opening weekend feature the Jets at Detroit, followed by the Rams at Oakland. The NFL schedule was revealed Thursday night. The Packers will follow their opener with a Sunday afternoon home game with the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 16. Green Bay’s other
GREEN BAY — An offseason of change for the Green Bay Packers has been met with occasional displeasure by quarterback Aaron Rodgers. At the Super Bowl, Rodgers called it “interesting” that the Packers replaced quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt “without consulting me.” Also that week, he spoke of the possibility he might have to finish his career elsewhere, like predecessor Brett Favre. In the wake of the Packers’ decision to release his close friend Jordy
GREEN BAY — Free agent cornerback Davon House is returning to the Green Bay Packers after agreeing to terms on a one-year deal. General manager Brian Gutekunst announced the signing on Friday. House was Green Bay’s fourth-round draft pick in 2011. He’s the second former Packers cornerback to return to the defense this offseason, joining Tramon Williams. House started all 12 games he played last year in Green Bay, finishing fourth on the team with nine passes defended. A
