The Grammy-winning band Bon Iver, fronted by Eau Claire native Justin Vernon, will be visiting the Milwaukee lakefront this summer.

Summerfest announced Friday that Bon Iver will headline the American Family Insurance Amphitheater on Saturday, June 29. Opening acts for the show are Lord Huron and Julien Baker. The date is sandwiched between performances in Sweden and Spain during a European tour.

Improvements this summer at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater — formerly the Marcus Amphitheater — will include a new seating bowl configuration and raised stage, expanded concourses, new video screens and additional restrooms. A first phase will be complete by this summer’s event and a second phase in 2020.

Summerfest bills itself as the “world’s largest music festival” with more than 800 acts on 11 stages over 11 days. It runs June 26 through July 7, with the exception of being closed on July 1. The amphitheater is the main stage, with seating for about 23,000.

Bon Iver’s show at Summerfest is its only concert in the summer scheduled for Wisconsin, according to a news release from the festival.

“That statement, no doubt, will create speculation, and perhaps concern, from Eaux Claires fans, who still haven’t heard if there’ll be a fifth installment this summer,” reported the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in regard to the annual music event held in Eau Claire. “Vernon has performed at every Eaux Claires, but his last set there with Bon Iver was in 2016, so it’s possible the festival is still happening but Bon Iver isn’t performing.

“But in the past few years, the dates for the festival were released the previous fall, and there’s still no news about a potential 2019 edition on the festival’s website or social media accounts.”
