CHIPPEWA FALLS — The state's Department of Health Services reported another 23 COVID-19-related fatalities on Wednesday, along with another 2,423 positive cases.

Rusk and Buffalo counties each had one virus-related death, the state agency reported.

Rusk County had just 17 virus-related deaths on June 1, when vaccines were widely available to everyone, and the county has had 16 deaths since then, or roughly 48% of the county's deaths. Rusk County now is averaging 232.8 deaths per 100,000 residents, far ahead of the state's rate of 140.1 deaths per 100,000 residents. Only 38.0% of the county's residents have received at least one vaccination, the third-lowest rate in the state.

The state's vaccination rate remains at 57.2% of all residents with at least one vaccination. Among counties in western Wisconsin, only Trempealeau County (61.7%) is ahead of the state's rate.
