MEDFORD — The second installment of Medford-based author Jeff Hein’s historical fiction series “The Cimbrian War,” is now available. Part of a four book series, the second book follows the Cimbri after their battle with Rome in 113 B.C. as they travel onward.

“Rise of the Red Wolf” continues the story of the Cimbri, an Iron-Age Germanic tribe living in Jutland in 120 B.C. After suffering a devastating defeat in Noricum, Rome is in a panic, and fears of a barbarian invasion grip the city. With no legions to defend the mountain passes, all of Italy is now open to the Germanic tribes, but the Cimbri inexplicably turn away and disappear back into the mysterious north.
