A body found Thursday near Dells Pond has been identified as U.S. Army veteran Nicholas M. Wagener, 38, of Eau Claire.
The Eau Claire Police Department put out a Green Alert on Monday to notify the public about a missing veteran at risk. Wagener was last seen Sept. 5 on the north side of Eau Claire after indicating he was going camping, according to a missing person poster shared by his family. He was reported missing Sept. 11.
“The search is over. Although we did not get the outcome we had hoped, prayed and chanted for we must now comfort ourselves knowing Nick is finally at peace,” Wagener’s mother, Jinger Mandt, posted Saturday on Facebook. “Our beautiful, intelligent, loving first born son was truly a gentle soul who brought us 38 years of joy. Thank you to all of you that shared our post and the veterans Green Alert post as we searched for him.”
Eau Claire police said they received a report at 2:12 p.m. Thursday of a deceased male along the embankment of Dells Pond at the dead end of Churchill Street on the city’s near north side.
Police spokeswoman Bridget Coit confirmed Saturday the body had been identified as Wagener and said no foul play is suspected.
