NEILLSVILLE — An 8-year-old died and three other children were injured after a buggy they were riding in was hit by a vehicle Wednesday morning in the Clark County town of Fremont.
According to the sheriff's office:
A call reporting the crash was received at about 8:50 a.m.
The initial investigation indicates a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old girl was traveling east behind another vehicle on Highway H, near Hi Line Avenue, north of Chili and west of Marshfield. The vehicle ahead of her swerved to the left, but the right front corner of the teenager's car hit the buggy that was traveling in the same direction along the side of the road.
The buggy had four passengers — children ages 13, 10, 8 and 6. All the children were ejected from the buggy, which came to rest in the south ditch after the crash.
The 8-year-old died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The 10- and 6-year-olds received severe injuries, and the 13-year-old suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The 17-year-old driver, from the Neillsville area, was alone in her vehicle and was wearing a seat belt.
The sheriff's office is not releasing names of those involved in the crash due to their young ages.
This is the sixth traffic fatality in Clark County this year.
