RICE LAKE — A fire broke out early Thursday at a Rice Lake factory.

The Rice Lake Fire Department received a report of a structure fire at about 2:05 a.m. at American Excelsior, 831 Pioneer Ave.

When firefighters arrived, moderate smoke was coming from one end of the building. Firefighters entered the building and used foam to extinguish the fire. The fire was under control at 3:06 a.m., but firefighters remained on scene until 4:49 a.m. to ensure it was out, according to a Fire Department statement.

The fire was contained to equipment in two parts of the facility, and the cause of the blaze is under investigation. No damage estimate was available when the statement was released Thursday morning.

According to the company's website, American Excelsior produces wood fibers used in animal bedding, packaging and archery targets; flexible foams found in packaging, furniture, flooring and medical uses; and products used to control erosion.
