EAU CLAIRE — Interim UW System President Tommy Thompson will visit UW-Eau Claire on Monday as part of a campaign to encourage COVID-19 vaccinations among college students.
Thompson and UW-Eau Claire Chancellor James Schmidt will lead a celebration recognizing the university’s progress toward vaccination goals from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Campus Mall.
Dubbed “Smash COVID with Tommy and Chancellor Jim,” the event will feature music, free snacks, a T-shirt giveaway and other festivities.
A vaccination clinic will be held from 11:30 a.m. to noon nearby in the Flesch Family Welcome Center.
The UW System has a goal of reaching a 70% vaccination rate at all of its campuses. At the Eau Claire campus, just over 60% of the student body had provided proof they were vaccinated as of this week, according to statistics on the university’s website.
The university is running a contest with prizes including iPads, Apple watches and gift cards that are being awarded to vaccinated students. When UW-Eau Claire reaches the 70% vaccination rate goal, there will be drawings to award scholarships to students who have participated in the contest.
