Chippewa County authorities on Sunday found a pontoon resting against the shoreline of Lake Wissota north of the hydro dam in Chippewa Falls.

CHIPPEWA FALLS — Authorities discovered a body attached to the rope of a rubber tube Sunday morning near the buoys of the hydro dam in Lake Wissota.

According to a news release from the Chippewa County sheriff’s office:

The department received a call at 11:30 a.m. Sunday that a pontoon was resting against the shoreline of Lake Wissota north of the hydro dam that appeared to have been there for some time. Deputies located the pontoon with no one attending the unit.

Deputies discovered the pontoon was registered to a man from Minnesota and made contact with his mother, who indicated her son and a friend were boating on the lake Saturday afternoon and failed to return to a campground they were all staying at in Chippewa County.

At 12:30 p.m. Sunday the sheriff’s office received a call that a rubber tube had been found near the buoys at the hydro dam. The person who called in the tip reported a body was discovered attached to the rope of the tube.

The sheriff’s office retrieved the body and, along with the Chippewa Falls Fire District, state Department of Natural Resources and other volunteers, began to search for the second subject who was reported on the pontoon. The search continued into the evening with no success.

A search will continue today to locate that subject, a 22-year-old black man also from Minnesota.

Anyone who may have seen the pontoon on Lake Wissota and may have helpful information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 715-726-7701.
