GENEALOGY: The Chippewa County Genealogy Society will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at the History Center, 123 Allen St., Chippewa Falls.

Participants will share ancestors’ stories.

The meeting is open to the public.

Research assistance is available before and after the meeting.

MEET THE VIKINGS: Castlerock Museum in Alma will hold its annual “Meet the Vikings” event from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 23.

Re-enactors will be available to answer questions about Viking history, culture, technology, clothing and weapons.

There will also be several re-created Viking and Anglo-Saxon shields on display.

Demonstrations will show band weaving with a rigid heddle backstrap loom, spinning yarn with drop spindles, nalbinding and how silver inlays were made in iron.

Visitors can see several Viking-era artifacts on exhibit including a spangenhelm, chieftain’s sword and Danish axe.

Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students. Children under age 5 are admitted free.

GRANT APPLICATIONS: The Women’s Giving Circle will be offering grants of up to $6,000 to Eau Claire area nonprofit organizations that work to enhance the well being of women and children.

Grant applications will be accepted beginning April 1. The deadline is July 1.

MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOL: Chippewa Valley Technical College has been named a Military Friendly School for 2019 by Viqtory Media.

The designation by Viqtory Media is awarded to the top colleges, universities, community colleges and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military students and ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation.

The list serves as a resource for service members and military families seeking education and has played a significant role in advancing best practices in supporting military students on campuses across the country.

Institutions earning Military Friendly School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a survey completed by the school.

AWARD: The UW-River Falls athletics department was honored with the NCAA and Minority Opportunities Athletic Association’s 2019 Award for Diversity and Inclusion during the 2019 NCAA Convention.

The award is a partnership between the two organizations to recognize and celebrate the practices, programs and policies of NCAA colleges, universities and athletics conference offices that embrace diversity and inclusion.

Schools have been recognized for their professional development programs that help educate staff and student-athletes about inclusive practices, community outreach as it relates to diversity, and efforts that enhance opportunities for people of diverse cultures, backgrounds and experiences.

There are more than 1,100 eligible institutions in the NCAA and UW-River Falls is the only Division 3 university to receive the award since its inception in 2013.
