On Aug. 7, Diesterhaft was shot by Eau Claire County sheriff’s deputies after a high-speed chase that started in Dunn County.

According to statements from the Dunn and Eau Claire county sheriff’s offices:
The Dunn County sheriff’s office received a report at 1:14 p.m. of a man harassing a woman in the town of Rock Creek.
A deputy later made contact with Diesterhaft in Caryville, and he left the scene in his vehicle.
Diesterhaft was later found in the Eau Claire County town of Brunswick where he got out of his vehicle and confronted deputies with a weapon. Two Eau Claire County deputies fired at Diesterhaft and hit him.
