Avis Elaine Olson, age 85, of Pigeon Falls, formerly of York, died Friday, August 22, 2014 at Pigeon Falls Health Care in Pigeon Falls after a long battle with Alzheimer's and Dementia issues.
Avis was born on Decoration Day, May 30, 1929, at Whitehall Community Hospital to Edwin A. and Agnes (Anderson) Olson. She grew up on the Anderson farm in Timber Creek and enjoyed all her formal education at the 8 grades at Timber Creek School. After 8th grade graduation she stayed on the farm and worked there, being the only living child, and she also worked for some neighbors.
On June 11, 1952, she and Vernon L. Olson were married at Northfield Lutheran Church by Rev. S.L. Almlie. After marriage they helped both their parents on their farms and later moved to Osseo as Vernon worked in town as a mechanic and Avis was a stay at home housewife. In 1964 they moved to the Anderson Farm in Timber Creek and began farming. This was also the time of the opening of Osseo Area Hospital and Nursing Home. Avis, one who had always been intrigued with patient care and had a passion for it, began working at the hospital as an aide. In the late 1960's she earned her certificate to become a Certified Nursing Assistant - CNA. She worked at Osseo for many years and later worked at the Pigeon Falls Nursing Home, retiring in 1994. Even then she continued to help serve meals and worked often as a volunteer.
Avis was a very hard working farmwife. She often would come home from a day at the Hospital, then unload a load or two of hay, and perhaps mow the lawn (no rider) work in the garden, etc.. She was much admired by her children.
Avis had a very strong personal faith in the Lord Jesus. She served him in nearly every capacity possible, organist for about 35 years at various churches, teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, enjoying many Bible studies, and was faithful with daily devotion and prayer.
Since Norwegian was her first language she had a good interest in her Norwegian roots. She made two trips to Norway and was thrilled to meet 2nd cousins with whom she could speak fluently to in Land. She was a longtime member of Osseo Sons of Norway.
Avis is survived by her daughter Susan (Marty) Mickelson of Northfield; grandson Ryan (Stephanie) Mickelson of Northfield; granddaughter Tiffany (Michael) Huppert of Ellsworth; great grandson Nathaniel Huppert; a very special cousin and sister-in-law, Melva Olson of Pigeon Falls; two brothers in law, Spencer Olson of Osseo and Maynard Monson of Hazel Green. She is further survived by other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides her parents, Avis was preceded in death by her husband Vernon, son David, a still born son Randall and a still born twin sister Lorraine.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at New Hope Lutheran Church with Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Northfield Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5-8 PM Monday at Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home in Hixton. Friends may also call from 10:00 AM until the time of services at the church on Tuesday.
