Fern Rita Joyce Knudtson, age 92, of Whitehall, died on Saturday, January 5, 2019 in the Gundersen Tri-County Hospital in Whitehall.
Fern was born on September 26, 1926 in Irvins Coulee, rural Whitehall, to Joseph and Celina (Fournier) Stahoski. She graduated from the Whitehall High School in 1946 and married Milton Knudtson on October 4, 1947 in Black River Falls. Milton preceded Fern in death on June 16, 1978.
Fern worked as a bookkeeper and insurance agent for an insurance agency in Independence prior to her retirement. After her retirement, Fern worked in home care.
Fern was a long time member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church, served on the Election Board and Meals on Wheels Board, was a girl scout assistant and a member of the Tri-County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Fern was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #191 for over 70 years. She served in all capacities and had been president for the last 30 years and the poppy chairman for the last 50 years. Fern was also a past county president.
Fern is survived by her children, Jane (Dale) Kragness, James (Darline) Knudtson, Susan Turner, Alyn (Sandra) Knudtson, Bruce Bushy Knudtson, Nancy Knudtson, Steven Knudtson, Sandy Everson and Heidi Knudtson; 14 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild and a sister, Virginia Greeley. She is also survived by two grandpuppies, Millie and Buttons.
In addition to her parents and husband, Fern was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gary Everson; three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Saviours Lutheran Church with burial in the Lincoln Cemetery both in Whitehall. Pastor Peter Jonas will officiate.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 9, 2019 from 4-7 p.m. in the Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
