John Sonsalla

John Sonsalla, 84, of Independence passed away on November 25th, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

John was a dairy farmer on the family farm for the majority of his life. He loved life. He cared for people and animals. His five girls were his sunshine. He was supportive in all of their efforts in 4-H and in life. John was a loving husband to Bernice, his wife of 57 years. She was his queen. When they moved to the city, he became the cook of the family. After farming, John worked at Ashley Furniture in Arcadia for 17 years. He retired after suffering a heart attack at the age of eighty. He continued to cater to his queen by waking up with her at 3:30 am each day to make her coffee or breakfast before she would go to work. She would rub his back before leaving each day. He anxiously awaited her return each day.

John is survived by his loving wife, Bernice (Slaby), his loving daughters: Deb (Steve) Baker, Shari (Harry) Strand, Sandi (Scott) Parr, Dawn Sonsalla and Amy (David) Hawks, twelve grandchildren: Dan (Alyssa) Baker and Lauren Baker, Scott and Beth Strand, Katie (Jordan) DeWall and Brian Stark, Tyler, Deion, Tennisha and Makenna Sonsalla, Madison and Abby Hawks and one great grandson, Donte Sonsalla.

John was preceded in death by his father, Ignatz Sonsalla, his mother, Catherine (Woychik) Sonsalla, his sisters: Bernice Boland and Sister Jean (Beatrice) Sonsalla, his brother in law, Dick Boland and nephews: Rick Boland and Michael Boland.

Visitation will be from 10 — 11 am on December 7, 2018 with the funeral services starting at 11 am at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Independence. Burial will take place in the church cemetery following mass.
