Rolleen Guntner

Rolleen M. Guntner, 79, of rural Augusta, passed away Monday morning, Dec. 10, 2018, at Dove Healthcare-South in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Rolleen Mary Guntner was born April 16, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, and shortly after birth was adopted by her loving and devoted parents, Rolland and Vera (Reddy) Circle. Rolleen was raised in Chicago where she was baptized and confirmed at St. Raphael Catholic Church and graduated in 1957 from Mercy Catholic High School.

On Feb. 8, 1958, Rolleen was united in marriage to Philip T. Gunter at St. Raphael Catholic Church and for the next 22 years the couple lived and raised their family in the Chicago area. During these years she was a very active member and choir member of St. Alexander’s Catholic Church in Palos Heights.

In 1980, Phil and Rolleen with their younger children moved to Augusta, Wisconsin, when they purchased the Hideaway Bar on Lake Eau Claire, which they operated for 26 years. In addition to working as a bartender, cook, and manager of the bar, she also did the books for Phil’s Septic Service. Shortly after the Guntner’s moved to the area Rolleen’s mother also moved to Augusta, and Rolleen with her family always saw to it that Vera was well taken care of. In the late 1990s Rolleen started working as an event server for the Plaza Inn in Eau Claire. Rolleen thoroughly enjoyed this job and her co-workers so much, that she worked there until the age of 72 when she retired in 2011.

After moving to Augusta, Rolleen continued her church involvement and singing with St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Augusta, and then with St. Raymond’s Catholic Church in Brackett. Over the years she had served as a member of the Augusta American Legion Auxiliary, was a Pampered Chef representative and enjoyed the friendships shared with her fellow Penguins.

Rolleen’s love for adventure started during her youth when as a child visited Ireland several times with her parents. She also traveled to Ireland twice with her husband and other times with family and friends, as well as visiting other countries and many states throughout the United States.

Rolleen was blessed with an enormous loving and giving heart. Her faith and love for her Lord was so very important to her and she lived her faith as an example to others. Growing up as an only child she thrived as the precious mother of 10 children, grandmother to 33 and great-grandmother to 22, as well as a friend to many and especially her longtime friends Madelyn “Chicky,” Sheila and Mary Lou.

Rolleen will be dearly missed by 6 sons, Philip Jr. and Marianne Guntner of Augusta, Thomas and Roxanne Guntner of Oak Forest, IL, Steven and Darcy Guntner, Daniel Guntner, Paul and Julie Guntner, Andy and Tobey Guntner, all of Augusta; 3 daughters, Leanne and Howard Wangen of Chippewa Falls, WI, Vicki and Dennis Kinderman of Fall Creek, WI, Margaret Bement and Jacob Yule of Augusta; German daughter, Michele and Kevin Lone of Chanhassen, MN; 33 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; sister Katherine Brisson of Green Bay, WI; brother-in-law, Gordon and Corinne Guntner of Bremen, IN; 3 sisters-in law, Barbara Bainbridge of Homer Glen, IL, Patricia and John Nystrom of Frankfort, IL, April and Roger Christ of Palos Park, IL; other relatives and many friends.
