Blugolds come back

UW-Eau Claire men’s basketball overcame a three-point halftime deficit to beat Northland, 72-61.

The Blugolds shot 51 percent in the second half as they were led by Ben Widdes, who scored 13 of his 20 points in the final 20 minutes.

Cole Rabedeaux scored 17 and Cam Kuepers 10 as Eau Claire moved to 5-2.

UW-Stout survives upset scare

John Keefe hit a 3-point shot with 8.8 seconds remaining to lift UW-Stout men’s basketball over NAIA opponent Silver Lake, 94-92.

Keefe’s final shot capped off a 24 point night from him, which led the 4-3 Blue Devils. Silver Lake went up by one point with 53 seconds remaining on a shot by Thomas Bullock.

Byron Dean Jr. kept the Lakers in the game, scoring 30 points on 10 of 17 shooting. Stout’s Luke Geiger scored 15 and Braden Walbeck added 12.

Two named to All-Region team

UW-Eau Claire linebacker Sam Romanski and UW-Stout tackle Caleb Adams were named to the D3football.com All-West Region Team announced on Tuesday.

Romanski, who led the WIAC in sacks and tackles for loss, was a first-team selection, while Adams made the second team.

Romanski’s 14.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss ranked third and 15th in the country, respectively. Adams was a three-year starter for the Blue Devils and was a key member of an offensive line that powered the Stout offense to 383.4 yards per game.

Steel hire an assistant

The Chippewa Steel added Zach Stepan as an assistant on interim coach Carter Foguth’s staff on Tuesday. The Minnesota State Mankato alum spent one year as a player in the United States Hockey League, finishing third in league scoring while with the Waterloo Blackhawks.
