Blugolds hand Falcons first WIAC loss of year
The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team handed UW-River Falls its first loss of the conference season.
The Blugolds scored the first four goals of the game, all in the first period. Courtney Wittig scored twice in that span, while Emily Bauer and Holly Turnbull both found the back of the net.
Sydney McKersie made 39 saves in net for the Blugolds.
Eau Claire's win sets up a rematch next Saturday at Hobbs Ice Center for the WIAC title. The Blugolds and Falcons are tied atop the conference standings.
Stout hockey plays to tie
The UW-Stout men’s hockey team saw a 3-0 lead vanish in a 4-4 tie with UW-River Falls on Saturday.
The Falcons scored three goals in the second period to even the score, and eventually took a 4-3 lead on a goal by Eddie Matsushima in the third period.
Stout’s Joe Kleven forced an overtime with a goal later in the third.
Tommi Ahlgren had 28 saves in net for Stout.
Steel swept by Jets
The Chippewa Steel saw a weekend series with Janesville swept away on Saturday, falling 3-2 to the Jets in their final game against the in-state foe this season.
The Jets scored three goals in the third period to overturn a 1-0 deficit. Eau Claire Memorial graduate Hutson Collins’ late goal wasn’t enough to complete a comeback for Chippewa.
Blugolds beat Gustavus
The UW-Eau Claire gymnastics team defeated Gustavus Adolphus 185.100-183.825 on Saturday.
Victoria Perron won the vault for Eau Claire, while the Blugolds also took the top three spots on the balance beam.
