Loomis leads Central No. 1

Ben Loomis, who won the individual jumping and Nordic Combined on Thursday, led Central No. 1 to a lopsided win in team jumping at the National Junior Nordic Ski Championships Friday at Steamboat Springs, Colo.

The 16-year-old Flying Eagle had jumps of 72½-74 meters (238-243 feet) and totaled 248.7 total points, the best score of the day. He was joined on the team by Casey Larson and Patrick Gasienic of Chicago and Trevor Edlund of St. Paul.

Rocky Mountain No. 1 finished a distant second, 60 points behind. Nate Mattoon and Emilee Anderson led the Central No. 3 team to a fifth-place finish, while Central No. 2 took sixth led by Ben Dowling and Andrew Urlaub. Urlaub finished sixth in Thursday’s Under-16 Nordic Combined event.

Loomis won the U-18 combined, finishing 1:47 ahead of runner-up Grant Andrews, Steamboat Springs.

Two Blugolds named All-WIAC

UW-Eau Claire women’s hockey players Andi Husted and Paige Turner were named first-team All-WIAC, the conference announced Friday.

Sophomore Paige Dale received honorable mention.

UW-Stevens Point junior forward Emily Lester, an ECA Stars alumna, also was named to the All-WIAC first team.
