Sam Price never gave up on her dream.
The 2009 Eau Claire North graduate, who played college basketball at St. Cloud State, didn't want to stop playing the game she loved. So she didn't. Price spent nearly a year trying to catch on with a professional team before finally signing a contract Saturday with Aris Basketball Club in Thessaloniki, Greece.
“I've always been chasing that dream, but now it's actually coming true, and that's pretty cool,” Price said.
Price, who has been playing basketball since she was 7 years old, had a much more modest goal when she began her prep career with the Huskies.
“I just wanted to play at a Division III college,” Price said. “Then I started to get DI, DII offers. Then I started thinking I kind of want to play professional basketball too.”
Price, an all-state honorbale mention in high school and a two-time all-conference selection in college, signed with an agent in the summer to pursue her dream of turning pro. She participated in numerous Pro-Ams and Invitationals with no luck before finally getting her break.
A friend of hers who works for the Minnesota Timberwolves sent Price an email about the team in Greece looking for women's basketball players. Price sent Aris her highlight film and — after nearly missing the team's response when the email went into her spam folder — signed a contract that begins in April and ends in January.
But she hopes she'll be playing basketball for much longer than that.
“After this one, I'm hoping more contracts will be offered, better contracts from different countries,” Price said. “I want to play until my body doesn't allow me to anymore.”
